Security companies alert of new Cyber Threat

Two cyber security firms claimed that they have revealed a complicated part of nasty software having the ability to cause power outages by regulating industrial PCs to shut down transmission of electricity.

Study of the malware, dubbed as Industroyer or Crash Override, represents it was probably utilized in a December 2016 cyber attack that slashed power in Ukraine, as per the companies, the U.S. critical-infrastructure security company Dragos Inc and Slovakian security software manufacturer ESET.

The discovery may put fuel on fears about vulnerabilities related to cyber attacks in power grids that have strengthened in the beginning of the December Ukraine attack. Seeing at the bright side, cyber security firms all over the world will start looking for solutions thus boosting the global cyber security services and solution market.

Ukraine’s system has earlier held Russia responsible for the attacks on its grid. Moscow has refused these allegations.

Robert M. Lee, founder of Dragos, claimed that the malware has the capability of causing power outages by regulating industrial PCs to shut down transmission of electricity, but is not strong enough to overthrow an entire grid of the country.

The firm has warned power companies and government authorities about the threat, counseling them of measures to guard against the threat, Lee stated to the media.

Industroyer or Crash Override can be recognized if a service particularly observes its network for irregular traffic, comprising symptoms that the malware is looking for the position of sending messages or substations to toggle breakers, as per Lee, who is a former U.S. Air Force Warfare Operations Officer.

The model of Industroyer or Crash Override that was analyzed by Dragos has the capability of attacking power operators all across Europe, as per Lee.

“With minute alterations, it could be used against the U.S.,” he claimed.

Well, the media was provided with no further details by both the companies. Having said this, the discovery of this malware has two sides. Even though the malware can cause huge damage, we have the chance to evaluate it and prevent the damage before occurrence. For now, the global cyber security services and solution market has a golden opportunity to flourish.
